On the 7th of January 2023, the Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival launched to coincide with a momentous year for the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM). Named ‘NEXT 100’, the festival focuses on the future of architects while commemorating the 100th anniversary of PAM.

The opening ceremony was a vibrant a!air held at the President Hall of the PAM building. It was graced by YB Tn Haji Akmal Nasrullah bin Mohd Nasir, Deputy Minister for Local Government Development Ministry (KPKT), alongside professionals, graduates and friends of the building industry.

PAM President Ar. Sarly Adre Sarkum gave the opening remarks. He reminded the assembly of PAM’s mission to promote the advancement of architecture and the profession for the be”erment of society. He noted that the spirit of this year’s festival is fundamentally interlinked with the process of nation-building and sculpting societies.

KLAF 2023 Director Ar. Zaini Mufti took to the stage for his opening remarks, se”ing the narrative for this year’s festivitie

These addresses registered and graduate architects, local authorities, academics, developers, supply chain specialists, and students, amongst many others who create and contribute to the practice. Onehundred programs will be held throughout the year to achieve this. Five key thrusts, each aimed to bridge the gap between the various parties, have been chartered.

‘Engage’, convened by Syah Kamaruddin of Veritas, is directed at bringing together parties from all levels through a series of events including Town Halls with local authorities, Sports Fiestas, and Open Work. The last is where participating firms will open their doors to share insights into working.

‘Educate’, is aimed at graduates and students to enhance their transition into the industry. The main program is X-Tran, to provide knowledge and guidance for young graduates, through talks, workshops and guided sessions. Students will also get a chance to test their me”le through creating and building activities. This theme is headed by Ellina of DP.

The theme ‘Evolve’, mastered by Qhawa of Praktika Architects, focuses on future practices. The events under this theme are designed to explore future built environment possibilities and encourage innovation between di!erent generations of designers. A Metaverse Hack-a-thon, design competitions, and a Future Materials showcase are just a few of the exciting agendas.

‘Extend’, reaches out to those who are architecturally trained but have developed in other disciplines. Managed by Hakym of Sketchnation, it bridges those who have created a positive impact in the allied fields to the core architectural community. Participants can look forward to the ‘Shine’ exhibition, and workshops highlighting valuable skill sets such as laser cu”ing, photography and the arts.

Last but not least, ‘Evoke’, is set to honour the past. Its main objective is to learn from history and to acknowledge contributors to the industry, with programs overseen by Sacha of Sacha & Tan. It will provide a plaform for senior members to share their knowledge through a series of conversations, tours, and hallmark events like DATUM, convened by Ar. Amzar this year.

Events under these five themes have already begun. ‘Headstart’, a career workshop at two institutions namely IIUM and UPM, and ‘XTran’, with successful enrolments. The timeline spans throughout the year, culminating at the internationally acclaimed conference ‘DATUM: We as 1’ in July, and continuing a#erwards to ensure an impactful relationship between all participating parties.

Ar. Zaini Mufti commended the many clusters of people involved in the festival and called upon those who are in varying career stages. Be it young graduates, architects studying for professional qualifications, newly set up firms, established firms, senior practitioners and even those marginally linked to the industry. This year’s KLAF is for all, to come back to a commonplace. To celebrate and innovate the profession together.
