THE BRIEF
Located on a 2.85-acre land in the southern enclave of Petaling Jaya, a highly visible site fronting the New Pantai Expressway (NPE), Helix2 is a medium-cost, lifestyle-driven housing development. Its main components — a stand-alone 33-storey residential tower, a detached three-storey clubhouse and a multi-level car park, together forming an integrated composition that encloses the central facility pool and shared communal amenities.
The single residential tower offers the rare luxury of ground-to-sky living, comprises 500 residential units ranging from 572sqft to 1,065sqft, and some units are planned right from the ground level, ensuring accessibility and ease of living for elderly residents. The topmost floors house four exclusive duplex penthouses, which complete the tower’s hierarchy. Externally, a carefully calibrated spectrum of colours defines the façade, shaping the building into a sculptural landmark within its surrounding neighbourhood.
Internally, the double-loaded floor plate of the tower adopts a non-conventional linear arrangement, with a deliberate tilt that generates multi-angled spatial openness while optimising cross-ventilation and daylight penetration along the common corridor.
Internally, the double-loaded floor plate of the tower adopts a non-conventional linear arrangement, with a deliberate tilt that generates multi-angled spatial openness while optimising cross-ventilation and daylight penetration along the common corridor. Each residential unit features a bay-window design, deliberately offset by 500mm horizontally on successive floors, generating a vertical rhythm across the façade. As a traditional indoor–outdoor fenestration, the bay window reintroduces its original function in modern architecture — projecting living spaces outward to capture light, views, and breeze, while balancing practical performance and visual expression.
The residential main entrance is strategically positioned at the quieter southern corner of the site, avoiding direct visual connection with the eastern commercial shop lots to enhance privacy and exclusivity. At the drop-off lobby, residents and visitors are welcomed by an iconic helical staircase set against a cascading water feature, forming a memorable arrival moment. Beyond this, the double-volume lobby opens to a resort-themed swimming pool nestled within lush landscaping, evoking an immediate sense of warmth and homecoming. The organically shaped pool and its surrounding landscape are planned as the social and recreational heart of the development, fostering a tranquil, sustainable urban living environment.
Communal amenities are extended to the rooftop of the residential tower, where there is a heritage-inspired sky garden thoughffully integrated into the landscape. More than a conventional garden in the sky, this elevated retreat is conceived as a series of experiential moments that evoke nostalgic memories, while framing expansive panoramic views of the South PJ skyline.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Owning a home is one of life’s most significant investments, carrying with it a responsibility for architects and designers to think beyond the provision of shelter. The built environment shapes how people move, connect, and experience their everyday lives, influencing well-being and daily interaction. In response, every aspect of Helix2 is conceived within a broader urban and social context. This housing development is designed to contribute meaningfully to its surroundings, enhancing both the quality of living and the long-term value of the community.
THE CHALLENGES
Life today feels more fragmented than ever. The media o!en exaggerates the extremes, and digital connections are replacing real, face-to-face interaction, especially for younger generations who grow up more attached to screens than to nature. On top of that, the non-stop pace of modern life leaves little mental breathing room, eroding moments of quiet and reflection. The result is a growing sense of disconnection: from community, from nature, and even from ourselves. Mental fatigue, shorter attention spans, and weakening social bonds have become some of the biggest challenges of our time.
ARCHITECTURAL RESPONSE: RE-CONNECTION THROUGH DESIGN
At its best, architecture can act as a counterbalance to this fragmentation. Helix² is therefore conceived not merely to fulfil commercial expectations, but as a place for re-connection. The design integrates spatial planning, circulation and landscape to promote interaction and establish a sense of belonging. Guided by these principles, Helix2 shapes an environment that restores social and ecological connections, strengthening the threads that bind communities together.
CONCLUSION: THE PRINCIPLE OF SHARED VALUE
At the heart of the design process is a commitment to shared value, guiding every design decision and shaping each space. Beyond its physical expression, Helix2 is driven by the belief that architecture can positively shape how people live and connect; it is intended to enrich daily life and support community living. By creating environments that are uplifting and responsive to their surroundings, it offers lasting experiential and investment value — a home where residents can live comfortably, feel grounded, and grow together.
