ELEVATING MALAYSIA’S FUTURE: MERDEKA 118
More than just a skyscraper, Merdeka 118 is a celebration of Malaysian ambition and innovation in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. At 678.9 metres tall, this landmark is the centrepiece of a 6.35-hectare urban revitalisation precinct surrounding Stadium Merdeka, the historic site of Tunku Abdul Rahman’s 1957 declaration of independence. The tower spans over 3.1 million square feet and includes 1.7 million square feet of premium Grade-A office space, a six-star Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur Hotel, and Southeast Asia’s highest observation deck.
Set on a diamond-shaped plan, Merdeka 118 is aligned with Stadium Negara and a four-acre linear water park designed by Sasaki Associates and Pentago Landscape Sdn. Bhd. This pedestrian-friendly space encourages community activity and establishes a visual connection with the Petronas Towers and the Kuala Lumpur Tower.
The tower’s crystalline form, articulated through differentiated glazing and illumination, presents itself as a unified composition of facets and patterns. Its triangular glass planes draw inspiration from traditional Malaysian art and craft, symbolising the nation’s diverse cultural heritage. This design language extends to the podium exterior and dual lobby interiors, dramatically lit by skylights. The northern lobby connects to a larger southern space via escalators, distinguished by its soaring 35-storey atrium.
Developed and owned by PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn. Berhad, a subsidiary of Permodalan Nasional Berhad, the project involved extensive collaboration with a team of local and international design consultants. The Design Architect, Fender Katsalidis of Australia, worked closely with the Executive Architect of Record, RSP Architects Kuala Lumpur, together with Robert Bird Group, LERA of New York, and other consultants. Its completion as the world’s second-tallest building reflects years of planning, problem-solving, and stands as a testament to Malaysia’s national pride.
Working on a site of this scale requires close coordination with local authorities to enhance the urban environment. Infrastructure upgrades improved both pedestrian and vehicular circulation, while technical innovations ensured sustainability and adaptability. The tower’s hybrid belt truss structure and faceted form efficiently distribute wind loads while providing column-free office floors. Merdeka 118 is the tallest LEED Platinum (BD+C) building in the world, achieving a 28% reduction in energy use, a 32% reduction in potable water consumption, a 95% diversion of construction waste, and a 55% increase in open space.
Upon completion of the overall development, the precinct will feature 1.4 million square feet of retail space at Merdeka Mall, Oakwood Premier Serviced Residences, two residential towers, the Look at 118 Gallery, a Textile Museum, the PNB Little M Childcare Centre, and a mosque. The master plan anticipates more than 15,000 daily users, supported by 1.5 km of new underground access roads and enhanced connectivity to surrounding districts. Despite ongoing construction, improvements to infrastructure and public spaces have already enhanced the overall community experience, fostering inclusivity and vibrancy.
Completing a trio of super-tall markers with the Petronas Twin Towers and Kuala Lumpur Tower, Merdeka 118 adds an aspirational sense of place to Kuala Lumpur’s identity. At the same time, it delivers significant improvements to pedestrian and traffic infrastructure, embodying Malaysia’s heritage while confidently projecting its future as a global metropolis.
Merdeka 118 transforms Kuala Lumpur’s skyline with a crystalline, faceted tower that synthesises structural expression, cultural references, and civic placemaking within a major urban renewal development anchored by landscaped public realms and monumental, light-filled interiors.
