MENARA THE MATE

Menara The Mate, a signature 22-storey vertical ecosystem by OCR Construction Sdn Bhd, is designed for the post-pandemic paradigm. Spanning 1.01 acres in Petaling Jaya, the 89-meter tower seamlessly integrates 15 storeys of innovative office suites atop a seven-level podium. The podium comprises one level of facilities spaces, five levels of elevated parking, and ground-floor lobbies supported by three levels of sub-basement.

THE FAÇADE: THE GALLERY WALLS

In response to the surrounding urban grid, the façade is tailored into a gigantic composition of gallery walls, a deliberate departure from the monotonous glass-box office buildings typical of the context.

Staggered, light-coloured vertical fins create a rhythmic grid that frames each individual unit. Through the deliberate manipulation and interplay of these lines and grids, the gallery-wall façade generates multiple modes of framing, enabling the building owners to curate and project their professional identities and office images toward the public realm. These framed expressions become legible from multiple vantage points along the surrounding streetscape, transforming the façade into an active urban interface.

Staggered, light-coloured vertical fins choreograph a rhythmic play of shadows across the façade, adding depth and movement to the building’s surface

Between these volumes, the fins yield to create a subtle crevice of outdoor pockets and balconies accessible directly from the workspaces. These voids articulate and break down the building’s massing externally, while internally, they provide moments of visual release and frame picturesque views of Petaling Jaya.

A high-contrast palette, defined by light-coloured vertical fins set against a recessed dark backdrop, generates a dynamic layering effect with pronounced three-dimensional depth. Beyond its aesthetic impact, the façade serves as a passive solar filter, reducing thermal gain across the building’s envelope while establishing a distinctive, recognisable silhouette in the city’s skyline.

REIMAGINING THE URBAN WORKSPACE — THE SOCIAL CATALYST

Located in Petaling Jaya, Menara The Mate serves as a vital bridge between home and office, offering a sophisticated alternative to traditional remote work. Positioned as a liminal ‘Third Space’, Menara The Mate synthesises the domestic comfort of home with the professional rigour of a dynamic business hub, providing a purpose-built sanctuary for the distributed workforce.

It redefines modern typology by bringing together entrepreneurs, freelancers, and startups in a shared environment that encourages collaboration and exchange. Reflecting its commitment to this ecosystem, the developer—a publicly listed entity—also houses its own headquarters here. At Menara The Mate, where the boundaries of living and working are blurred, addressing a modern reality where we no longer go “to” work, but rather “live” our work.

The swimming pool and landscape decks provide communal spaces that encourage social interaction, blending leisure with connectivity
Subtle crevices of outdoor spaces and balconies punctuate the volumes, creating intimate pockets that soften the building’s massing

By integrating a swimming pool, gym, and landscaped gardens within the building, strategically distributed across multiple levels, the architecture fosters a dynamic interplay between individual and communal experiences. These spaces prioritise adaptability and social interaction, deliberately countering professional isolation and offering a focused, inspiring alternative to the constraints of working from home.

Beyond the building’s envelope, the communal spaces act as a social condenser, weaving disparate professional paths into a singular, cohesive way of living and working. Menara The Mate transcends the traditional office typology, creating a place with collaborative and inspiring environments for new people, new ideas and new experiences.
