Emerging as an independent nation in 1957, Malaysia embarked on forging a unified national identity amidst its diverse cultural tapestry and colonial legacy. The 1960s witnessed the rise of modernist architecture, playing a crucial role in shaping this nascent identity. The Angkasapuri complex, following the Parliament House, became a symbol of the nation’s commitment to truth and freedom, housing the Ministry of Information and Radio Television Malaysia. The Media City Masterplan represents a significant evolution, aiming to seamlessly integrate the existing buildings with the new structures through a network of multi-level plazas.

The new campus builds upon the bold modernist legacy with daring and distinct architectural forms, establishing a cohesive yet individual visual language across the entire site. This ambitious project signifies a breakthrough in integrating advanced technology with sophisticated and explorative architecture befitting a world-class broadcasting centre. The design draws profound inspiration from Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage and traditions, materialising local artistry through the expertise of local builders. It audaciously incorporates cutting-edge technical infrastructure within intricate architectural designs, enriching the new nation’s architecture.

The Auditorium hovering over the plaza

Each component of Media City is meticulously tailored to meet the evolving needs of the media industry, which resonates through its facade and interior design. The state-ofthe-art Auditorium uniquely blends cultural inspiration with technological sophistication, creating an engaging environment for every event. It is connected by multi-level pedestrian pathways. Facing the arrival plaza, the hovering volume creates an open undercroft suitable for diverse events and activities.

The facade, inspired by the graceful hand movements of traditional dancers, incorporates asymmetrical cladding fins that enhance the pre-function gallery with natural light. The interior captures the fluidity of a dance movement through precision design. Advanced acoustics and visual systems ensure an optimal and immersive, seamless audience interaction experience. The state-of-the-art TV Studios were similarly arranged in a dance formation, echoing cultural movements and their traces.

Menara Angkasapuri

Equipped with the advanced cameras, sound systems, and lighting, the studio guarantees optimal performance and production quality. The integration of cutting-edge equipment with culturally inspired design results in a visually striking and highly functional environment, enhancing both the creative process and the viewer experience.

The Music Studio, affectionately known as “The Red Hibiscus,” pays homage to Malaysia’s national flower. Its sculptural facade emulates the flower’s organic qualities through a design that plays with height, elevation, light, and shadow. The texture and tactility of the materials reflect the Songket design motifs, shape the rhombus floating metal screen facade and interior design, capturing the passion and innovations in the national cultural scene.

The administrative office tower is oriented north-south, with the Low-E glass enhancing and minimising energy consumption. The sustainability through passive design strategies is complemented by the energy-efficient lighting and air conditioning systems. The facade embellishes the three-dimensional triangular ornamentations, has become a distinctive and iconic feature of the new Angkasapuri.
