WORLD ARCHITECTURE DAY 2024 (WAD), themed Empowering the Next Generation in Participatory Urban Design, was marked by a series of inspiring events throughout October in Malaysia. Led by convenor Ar. Esmonde Yap and co-convenor Ar. Qhawarizmi, the celebrations brought architects, urban planners, students, and the public together to explore how architecture shapes our communities and cities. The diverse program offered something for everyone, highlighting the importance of architecture in fostering sustainability, cultural preservation, and innovation.
VIBESKL: A DYNAMIC KICK-OFF
The celebrations commenced on 28th September 2024 with VibesKL, a vibrant event held at PAM Centre, Kuala Lumpur. Geared towards young architects, students, and design enthusiasts, the event featured exhibitions, live art performances, and networking opportunities. It created a space for creative exchanges and showcased emerging talents, setting an energetic tone for the month-long celebration
HOUSING + URBANISM SYMPOSIUM: TACKLING URBAN CHALLENGES
On 7th October, the Housing + Urbanism Symposium convened architects, urban planners, and policymakers to discuss critical issues like sustainable housing, urban density, and livability. Held at the PAM Centre in Kuala Lumpur, the symposium fostered insightful conversations about creating inclusive cities. Attendees were exposed to innovative ideas addressing pressing urban challenges, emphasising the role of design in improving urban life.
LARIAN ARKITEK: PROMOTING WELLNESS AND COMMUNITY
The 12th of October saw architects and their families gather at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur, for Larian Arkitek, a fun run promoting physical wellness and camaraderie. This informal yet impactful event encouraged balance between work and well-being, creating an opportunity for the architectural community to connect in a relaxed setting.
DISCOVERING AI-CHITECTURE: PIONEERING INNOVATION
On 13th October, the Discovering AI-chitecture event explored the intersection of artificial intelligence and architectural design. Through expert presentations and interactive sessions, participants gained insights into the transformative potential of AI, sparking conversations about its implications for the profession. The event underscored how technology can reshape architectural practices while addressing ethical considerations.
YOUNG ARCHITECTS DIALOGUE: A PLATFORM FOR NEW VOICES
The Young Architects Dialogue took place on 18th October at the Theater Hotel in Kuching, Sarawak. This event highlighted the voices of emerging architects and designers who shared fresh ideas on sustainability, participatory design, and professional development. The dialogue reaffirmed the importance of empowering younger generations to contribute meaningfully to the built environment.
WAD FORUM TALK: HERITAGE MEETS INNOVATION
The WAD celebrations culminated on 26th October with a forum talk at the newly restored Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur, a national heritage site. Distinguished speakers, including Dato’ Ar. Hajeedar, Town Planner Afzal Azhari, and Ar. Qhawarizmi Norhisham explored topics ranging from heritage conservation to modern urban design. Accompanying activities such as yoga, batik painting, heritage tours, and Taichi sessions made the event inclusive and engaging.
MERDEKA 118 TOUR:
A GRAND FINALE
As part of the Union de International Architects (UIA) Forum 2024, an exclusive tour of the Merdeka 118 tower was conducted on 21st November 2024. Tengku Dato’ Ab Aziz Tengku Mahmud, CEO of PNB Merdeka Ventures, guided 40 participants through the engineering and design marvel of the world’s second-tallest building. The tour highlighted how the structure bridges cultural heritage with cutting-edge innovation, symbolising Malaysia’s architectural excellence.
A MEMORABLE CELEBRATION
World Architecture Day 2024 successfully celebrated architecture’s capacity to connect people, preserve heritage, and inspire innovation. Under the leadership of Ar. Esmonde Yap and Ar. Qhawarizmi, each event enriched participants’ understanding of architecture’s role in shaping sustainable and inclusive futures.
