Glazed pavilion foregrounds the illuminated silhouette of Merdeka 118 at night

Look At 118 is a civic lookout and visitor destination strategically positioned at the end of the Merdeka Boulevard within the Merdeka 118 masterplan, envisioned as a celebratory culmination of the public realm sequence. It marks the symbolic and physical endpoint of the boulevard—a place where movement slows, perspectives open, and visitors are invited to pause and reflect. As the first arrival point from the southern entrance via Jalan Maharajalela and the adjacent monorail station, the building plays an important urban role. An elevated public plaza gently guides visitors from the transport hub toward the boulevard, choreographing a gradual transition from the city’s dynamic flow into a more contemplative civic space.

At its core, Look At 118 houses the Merdeka Textile Museum, a cultural institution dedicated to exhibiting Malaysia’s unique and extraordinary traditional textile collections. The museum celebrates the nation’s rich craft heritage, presenting textiles not merely as artefacts, but as living expressions of identity, artistry, and memory. The building is organised across four carefully planned levels, each serving a distinct yet interconnected function. Level B1 accommodates the museum’s management offices and resource centre, supporting research, conservation, and administrative activities.

Level 1 functions as the primary exhibition gallery, where curated displays introduce visitors to Malaysia’s diverse textile traditions. Level 2 and 2M provide food and beverage outlets alongside souvenir retail spaces, extending the visitor experience into leisure and social engagement. Crowning the building, Level 3 opens onto a rooftop observation deck, offering expansive views across the precinct and toward the skyline, especially the tower itself, Menara Merdeka 118.

Architecturally, Look At 118 is conceived as a pavilion of civic simplicity. Its form—a subtly tilted glass box—aligns with the diamond-angled cut façade of the Menara Merdeka 118, establishing a deliberate visual dialogue across the site. This alignment reinforces a sense of continuity within the masterplan, while the building’s transparent architecture reflects the tower and the surrounding landscape. The use of glass ensures that the public realm remains visually uninterrupted, preserving openness and long sightlines through the site. Rather than asserting dominance, the structure maintains permeability, allowing city, landscape, and people to remain interconnected.

A rhythmic colonnade of white columns subtly recalls the civic order of the Parthenon on the Acropolis, lending the pavilion a sense of dignity without monumentality. The glass volume is gently anchored by a solid GFRC wall, suggesting that lightness and transparency are grounded in intention and memory. L2M is configured with a smaller floor plate to establish a dynamic overlooking relationship with Level 2, fostering a heightened sense of openness and spatial dialogue. A sculptural and structural spiral staircase links Level 1 to L2M, introducing fluid movement and a deliberate contrast that enriches the overall design language of Look At 118.

The façade facing Jalan Maharajalela is wrapped in perforated cladding that forms the silhouette of Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s first Prime Minister. This symbolic gesture creates a powerful link to the neighbouring Stadium Merdeka, where the 1957 Independence declaration was proclaimed. Through this architectural expression, the building becomes a vessel of memory, embedding national history within its contemporary form. Ultimately, Look At 118 is not conceived as a building, but as a carefully positioned frame—an unassuming yet meaningful structure that gives presence to the city, the landscape, and the enduring narrative of place.
