House No.36 is a modern energy-efficient home with 20kWp of solar PV set amid metro Kuala Lumpur. The surrounding neighbourhood is fully developed with generally large vernacular 2 to 3-storey bungalows. The brief required a house for a two-generational family with generous open living spaces to entertain guests and private rooms with resort facilities customised to each family member’s requirements and also green sustainable features.

The site comprised a long and narrow lot sloping down from the road. The front façade is designed with a stainless-steel mirror finish brise-soleil that acts as a projection screen of the surrounding trees and sky condition of the day and yet reflects the harsh sunlight and heat.

Pockets of open spaces incorporated to promote natural ventilation and lighting open out unto the cantilevered private balconies. These provide canopy roof cover for the building and give necessary shelter and shade to the spaces below, creating high-volume spaces, courtyards, nooks and hanging gardens.

The external balustrades are bi-functional as a planter with Vernonia elliptica, vines drooping downwards to form a green curtain providing natural screening.

The sculptural warp stair at the main entrance thoroughfares to the lounge deck with a view of the diamanté planter hovering over the pool. The pool and resort facilities located at the lower levels act as adiabatic cooling to help reduce the temperature in the house.
