For the public
It was always the intention of the PAM Northern Chapter organising commi ee to engage with the public on World Architecture Day, so we chose a very public venue for the HIN BUS DEPOT in George Town Penang. The venue is eco-friendly (natural ventilation) and accessible to the general public.

The event was offciated by the Deputy Chief Minister of Penang. The Mayor of Penang Island was also, in a endance.

The eventsThe main event was the talk by a diverse and talented group of individuals based on the theme of “DESIGN FOR HEALTH ” on the 1st day. Ar. Dr Serina Hijas kicked o” the talk with “Shaping Sus

tainability”. Data and numbers are indisputable facts in gauging sustainable design in Architecture and Urban design and its contribution to human health. Ar. Serina advocates making sustainability a “way of thinking” during the design process rather than a metaphor. Next Ar. Shyuan Knee’s title was “Architecture’s positive Impact on Health” From cradle to the grave appeared to be the flow of the presentation, with an innovative hospital design and a respec ul and dignified design for a memorial park. Well-designed architectural work can and does contribute to be er well-being.

Mr Richard Sco Wilson from Hamilton International shared “Rebalance: Health of the City” The projects were on a larger scale, yet particular attention was concentrated on the details of the public realm and its contribution to both mental and physical health. Integrating landscaping and social activities can encourage a more holistic, healthy way to rebalance city life.

WAD 2022 Forum speakers Ar. TPr. Leong Siew Leng, Azmi Zakaria, Ar. Azim Tan Sri Abdul Aziz, Ar. Siti Norlina Abdul Malik, and Ar. Mumtazah Mustajab.

Chiam’s talk on the evolution of healthcare design laid the ground for Ar. Min’s Bagan Specialist Centre project in Penang. Mr Kun Lim delivered “A River Of Ideas: How My Childhood Shaped my Design Thinking”, a talk on projects from sport centre to religious facilities, filled with personal design antidotes that kept the audience enthralled throughout.

On the second day, there was a public workshop featuring Urban sketching by MR. KHOO CHEANG JIN, Creative photography by MR. TEH WENG JEN and a talk on the use of reusable and salvaged timber by AR. MEI CHEE SEONG and MR. GOOI KOOK WAH.
