Minaret design of the surau
The Madrasah Bustanul Ulum is a community surau located in Taman Tugu. The surau is a rebuild of an existing facility but relocated to a more important and prominent location. For us, the experience of Taman Tugu was an experience of body, mind and soul. Integrating the surau as a place for contemplation and meditation will satisfy the soul, thus completing this tripartite wellness experience. The actual layout is simple but with one distinction – the separation of the daily prayer zone from the spill over prayer zone. This improves energy efficiency during its operation. The materials chosen were honest and raw, to make sure very little upkeep was needed.
Interior of Main Prayer Hall

Taman Ilmu. The Indonesian word Bustanul translates into the word Taman in Malay; The word Ulum translates into the word Ilmu in Malay. Islam is knowledge and a way of life, and we wanted to express that. This mosque was seen beyond just a place of prayer and ritual but a place for ideas, contemplation and dialogue. The form of the mosque was deliberately intended to be low-profile allowing nature to dominate it. The extended prayer hall was made transparent and open, allowing the internal spaces to be highly visible and physically accessible from all edges. The brick perforation and undulation were designed to catch shadows, thus mapping the passing of the day and the importance of time in the ritual of prayer. This combination of openness and transparency, of the acknowledgement of discipline and ritual within Islam, aspires to promote the notion that a mosque and Islam are always approachable and accessible to all people.
