EXPLORING CONNECTIONS AND INSIGHTS
Kuala Lumpur Architectural Festival 2023, titled KLAF2023:NEXT100 celebrates PAM’s 100th anniversary. The theme chosen was NEXT100, simple but succinct for the occasion and to celebrate the centennial event. As we reminisce on the last 100 years, we surely look forward to the next 100 years with some excitement and anxiety at the same time. Relationships between humans and machines become more intertwined by the day and the nature of architectural practice will surely evolve into something different in decades to come. Five sub-themes were designed for this special year, to encompass the many facets of our practice. The sub-themes and their respective Conveners are: Engage (Ar. Syah Kamaruddin), Educate (Ar. Ellina Rahman), Evoke (Ar. Sacha Nordin), Evolve (Ar. Qhawarizmi Norhisham), and Extend (Ahmad Hakym Hilmy). In line with the theme, we originally planned for 100 programs, aiming to enrich and engage our community in diverse ways. Thankfully, we exceeded expectations, closing KLAF 2023 with a remarkable total of 117 programs. This achievement stands as a testament to our dedication and commitment to fostering a vibrant and dynamic architectural landscape.
The overbearing objective of NEXT100 is engagement. Architecture is an industry with many stakeholders. Among the more obvious ones are the conventional practitioners, architects in public service and local councils, academicians, students, and stain architectural practices. Besides those, many more play major and minor roles in elevating the quality of the built environment in the country. Developers, suppliers, contractors, allied professionals, artists, photographers, and illustrators are among the notable ones. NEXT100 celebrates diversity and provides a platform for meaningful engagement among all. Among the notable events which enhance engagement among the stakeholders are as follows:
LAUNCHING CEREMONY
On January 7th, 2023, Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) kicked off its centennial celebrations with the grand launch of KLAF2023 and the NEXT100 initiative. This jubilant celebration marked a significant milestone in PAM’s history, coinciding with its 100th anniversary. As a non-profit institute, PAM has been dedicated to fostering collaboration among its members and engaging with stakeholders in the architectural industry, allied professions, and friends of the industry. The event was graced by none other than YB Tuan Haji Akmal Nasrullah bin Mohd. Nasir, Deputy Minister at The Ministry of Local Government Development, officiated the ceremony alongside esteemed guests including Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM) President, Datin Yong Razidah, and the official sponsors of KLAF 2023. More than just a celebration of the past, KLAF2023 symbolized a vision for the future—a future where innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity are at the forefront of architectural practice. Through the NEXT100 initiative, PAM reaffirmed
its commitment to nurturing the next generation of architects and shaping a dynamic and inclusive architectural community. It was a momentous occasion that brought together architects, professionals, and enthusiasts alike, uniting them in a shared passion for architecture and design.
PAM AND KLAF 2023 AIDILFITRI
On May 5, 2023, an electrifying PAM and KLAF2023 Aidilfitri celebration took place at the PAM Centre. This open house had PAM members buzzing with excitement as they immersed themselves in a whirlwind of unforgettable experiences. Talented buskers enchanted the crowd with mesmerising live music, infusing the air with infectious energy. The decorations added a refreshing touch, emanating a charming kampong vibe. As laughter filled the air and bonds were strengthened, the event exemplified the spirit of community and camaraderie within the architectural profession.

It was an international architectural forum centred around a series of lectures from Malaysian and international architects that aimed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of architecture among professionals, students, and enthusiasts. Datum’s intentions and aims revolved around education, inspiration, dialogue, professional development, and cultural awareness. By providing a platform for the exchange of ideas and knowledge, Datum aimed to contribute to the growth and advancement of the architectural community in Malaysia and to promote architecture as a discipline that had the power to transform lives, communities, and the world we inhabit. This statement was even more amplified that year with the theme “We as One.” As the organiser, we aimed to bring back the focus on how the practice of architecture was inclusive and how it created an environment where all contributions were valued and respected. The panel of speakers showcased how architecture and architects had benefited from contributions from different cultures, backgrounds, professions, and experiences. The festival brought together these diverse values and celebrated diversity through architecture, highlighting the commonalities that bound human beings together.

THE YEAR THAT WAS EVOKED
THE BEGINNING
Architecture is all about the people. Sure, we get buildings done, but the best thing in architecture is that it opens up opportunities to meet people and make friends, and I was glad I took up the role as EVOKE Convenor because, personally, the biggest takeaway after more than a year of service was the friendship and trust that I found along the way.
It started back in July 2022, with a message from Ar. Zaini on my phone, which I would like to share here verbatim, emojis and all:
15 July 2022
Zaini:
Salam Sacha. I am submitting a bid for KLAF 2023 Directorship. Can I include you in my organising team? Hope u can assist. If it is successful, we will then plan in more detail and I shall not impose responsibilities/tasks more than you are willing to help. Thank you.
Sacha:
Sure. I will help to the best of my time, and not to the best of my abilities because I’m between running the office and stealing time with my family, there’s not much left. Hope you can give me that leeway.
26 September 2022
Zaini:
Salam Sacha. Updated the program. Would like to appoint you as one of the 5 conveners to head one of the 5 themes (u can then set up your team). I have you in mind for Evoke. Please go through and we’ll discuss it soon.
Sacha:
Morning. Ok, but will need guidance and help from PAM as I’ve never done anything like this before.
That was it. The commitment was sealed. Looking back, it was just a desire to serve the profession, and it was time I committed some of my own time to help my brethren in architecture.
THE JOURNEY
The idea behind the EVOKE module was driven by the idea of programmes that provided stimulus for thought, an evocation of ideas in the minds of all participants. These programmes ran throughout 2023, and they were as follows:
Iconic Conversations was a program designed to delve into various aspects of practice, design, heritage, legislation, and other pertinent matters in the lives of today’s architects. The format of the event departed from traditional lectures, instead embracing a dialogue setting reminiscent of round-table conversations or fireside talks. This approach aimed to foster a relaxed atmosphere, encouraging both speakers and the audience to freely share their stories and pose questions of genuine importance. Throughout the series, we hosted three Iconic Conversation events. The first, IC01: “The Roots of The Malaysian Architect: Looking Back to See Ahead,” explored the theme of identity in Malaysian architecture. IC02, titled “If Only I Knew Then What I Know Now,” offered panellists a platform to share personal experiences as women in the construction and built environment industry, along with the lessons they wished to impart. Lastly, IC03, “Winning In Architecture,” assembled a panel of five individuals with illustrious careers in winning architectural competitions, delving into their strategies for success.
Datum was the showcase of the EVOKE Festival Programme. It was, and still is, an International Architectural Forum centred around a series of lectures from Malaysian and International architects aimed at fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of architecture among professionals, students, and enthusiasts. For Datum 2023, we had chosen the theme “We As 1,” where the focus was on recentring the practice of Architecture as inclusive, valuing and respecting all contributions from different cultures, backgrounds, professions, and experiences. The intention was to celebrate our diversity through Architecture, highlighting the commonalities that bind us together as human beings.
Derived from the notion that “buildings are alive,” the Ziarah program comprised a series of architectural tours showcasing award-winning buildings, historical landmarks, and significant neighbourhoods in Kuala Lumpur. These tours aimed to evoke feelings of awe and nostalgia that cannot be experienced solely by viewing images on a screen. Led by architect/guide Ar. Ahmad Najib Ari0n, the Ziarah program took participants through the old neighbourhoods of Brickfields and Kampung Baru. Additionally, participants had the opportunity to visit the 8 PAM2023 Award-Winning Buildings, hosted by the actual designers themselves through Ziarah Datum.
THE MARKER
The Marker was a competition aimed at creating a commemorative ‘object’ to be installed at the PAM Building to mark our 100th anniversary. It is named a ‘marker’ because the final form of this art piece is not restricted. The only requirement is that it must be suitable for permanent display at the PAM Building, whether indoors or outdoors. There was a total of 6 finalists, with the winning entry named Illuminous Heritage. One of the jurors’ citations for the winning entry read as follows:
“Illuminous Heritage transcends all like an aura beyond architectural imagination, levitating above the common man like a beautiful ghost of PAM’s coming of age, an evanescent salute to the past”
The EVOKE festival program served as a platform for connecting individuals who share a profound interest in the intersection of design and emotion. Following a year of managing and curating the program, several key achievements emerged:
EMBRACING EMOTIONAL RESONANCE
EVOKE urged architects to delve deeper into the emotional resonance that architecture can evoke. This was evident in the Ziarah series, where buildings and spaces were explored not just for their aesthetics but for the feelings they invoked from awe and inspiration to nostalgia and contemplation. By emphasizing emotional engagement, the program facilitated a journey through physical experiences, leaving a lasting impact on participants and visitors alike.
ENCOURAGING CULTURAL EXPLORATION
Architecture is intricately linked to culture, history, and identity. EVOKE encouraged architects to draw inspiration from cultural contexts and traditions, fostering a rich tapestry of design narratives. This cultural exploration was evident during the Iconic Conversation series, where diverse perspectives were celebrated and shared, contributing to a more inclusive and globally aware architectural.
IGNITING INNOVATION EVOKE
challenged architects to push the boundaries of conventional design, igniting innovation in the process. This emphasis on innovation was seen in the Datum series, where architects from around the world showcased groundbreaking ideas through experimentation with materials, forms, narratives, and technologies. Such innovation enriches architectural discourse and propels the profession forward.
FOSTERING DIALOGUE AND COLLABORATION
EVOKE catalysed meaningful conversations, prompting architects to engage in discussions about architecture’s impact on society and the human experience. This dialogue was particularly prominent during the Iconic Conversation series, where the audience played a central role in raising questions and fostering dialogue.
CREATING LASTING IMPRESSIONS
Through the Marker Programme, EVOKE aimed to leave behind a permanent legacy at KLAF23. This initiative, symbolising 100 years of PAM’s existence, served as a gift to the Malaysian architectural profession. While dialogue and conversations were vital, the visual markers left by EVOKE cemented the contributions of KLAF23 and the broader architectural profession through PAM to the country’s memory.
THE ENDING
Through its various programs and initiatives, EVOKE has not only enriched the architectural discourse but has also contributed to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the built environment. As we reflect on its achievements, we recognise the profound impact of EVOKE in shaping the architectural landscape and inspiring future generations of architects to create spaces that resonate with humanity and culture.
EVOLVE: SHAPING THE FUTURE OF ARCHITECTURE THROUGH INNOVATION AND COLLABORATION
EVOLVE aims to spearhead the future, focusing on innovation, creativity, and technology adoption to shed light on where the profession is heading. Featuring a series of events to encourage the architectural community to fervently embrace new ideas, redefine the landscape of architectural services, and explore novel business models. These events serve as catalysts for transformative conversations, sparking a collective vision for the future of architectural practices.
At the forefront is the “Future Architectural Practice Competition,” a call to action to reimagine the conventional boundaries of architectural practice. Members are challenged to reimagine and reconceptualize the architectural consultancy practice (ACP) of the future. The results are promising, as a new paradigm is formulated with the integration of digital practice, while others leverage social media marketing and a collective practice approach.
Complementing this futuristic outlook is the “Architectural Journey” trilogy, offering a platform for reflection and knowledge exchange traversing all stages of an architectural career. Architectural Journey 1 delves into the trials and tribulations faced by ten graduate architects working in developer companies, higher learning institutions, architectural practices, branding agencies, and government agencies. By sharing diverse perspectives, experiences, and forge connections and gain insights that transcend individual journeys.
Architectural Journey 2 shifts the focus to the nascent years of architectural practices. Recognizing the inherent challenges in navigating the economic climate, the session features ten young architects sharing their challenges in relation to fee recovery, employment, client management, and project procurement. In an industry where the learning curve is steep, this dialogue fosters a collaborative spirit, nurturing a robust architectural community capable of weathering challenges.
Architectural Journey 3 features eight esteemed panellists sharing their professional odysseys, offering audiences a treasure trove of wisdom accumulated over decades. Through ups and downs, these seasoned professionals illuminate the path forward, providing valuable lessons to inform and inspire the next generation of architects. The series underscores the importance of drawing from the past to shape a resilient and forward-thinking future.
Culminating in this architectural exploration is the “PAM Metaverse Competition,” catapulting the industry into a digital frontier. The competition invites architects to envision a world where physical constraints are merely relative, gravity can be defied, and materials are constrained only by the boundaries of imagination. This foray into the metaverse not only challenges architects to rethink spatial design but also opens up unprecedented possibilities for architectural services leveraging cutting-edge technologies.
These events collectively represent a pivotal moment in architectural evolution, answering the very question of how architects can remain relevant in the public conversation of ideas. The transformative conversations initiated, and the ideas generated in these events set the stage for a dynamic and boundaryd-efying era for the next 100 years.
EXTEND: BRIDGING BOUNDARIES: CELEBRATING ARCHITECTURAL DIVERSITY AT KLAF2023
As the convener for the EXTEND division at the Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival 2023 (KLAF2023), I embarked on an enriching journey aimed at celebrating the diverse contributions of architecture graduates who have branched into various fields while maintaining ties with the architectural community.
The pinnacle of our efforts was the ‘SHINE’ exhibition, a week-long celebration featuring 12 main personalities and 57 special mini showcases. It was a testament to the diverse talents and contributions within our field.
Working alongside four other esteemed convener colleagues, whom I’ve long admired as great architects, was both a proud and humbling experience. Together, we expanded the network of our profession, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background or current path, felt welcomed and connected to PAM. Despite not yet being a licensed architect myself, this experience marked the first time in years that I truly felt a sense of belonging within the organization. Many of us who have strayed from the traditional architectural path still hold a strong affinity for the profession in our hearts and souls.
Through KLAF2023, we successfully reached out to a broader audience, fostering greater appreciation for PAM’s existence and making it more inclusive and accessible. Our collective efforts showcased the dynamism and versatility of architecture, inspiring individuals from all walks of life to engage with our profession.
In conclusion, serving as a convener for KLAF2023 was not just about organizing events; it was about building bridges, fostering belonging, and celebrating the multifaceted nature of architecture. It’s a journey I will always cherish, filled with lessons, camaraderie, and a renewed sense of purpose within the architectural community for the next 100 years to come.

EDUCATE: SHAPING TOMORROW’S ARCHITECTS
Architecture, like the brush strokes of a master painter, weaves a tapestry of inspiration and innovation. This milestone event illuminated the path towards architectural excellence and the nurturing of future talents, encapsulating a journey that transcends time and space. It starts with the innocent scribbles on walls and the imaginative constructions with Lego blocks and ice cream sticks, evolving through encouragement and education into a lifelong journey of excellence. In the vibrant world of design, where dreams take shape and structures breathe life, the celebration of PAM’s 100th year resonated with a resounding theme: EDUCATE.
IGNITING INSPIRATION: THE FIRST THRUST
The inaugural thrust of EDUCATE, aptly named ‘Ignite and Harness Interests’, captured the hearts and minds of budding architects across Malaysia. Programs such as the Joy of Creating & Building for primary schools and Tales of Architecture for secondary schools sparked a wave of creativity and enthusiasm. From the bustling streets of Klang Valley to the tranquil landscapes of Johor and Sarawak, thirteen schools, both public and private, joined in the journey of exploration.
Through model-making and storytelling, young talents unleashed their boundless imagination, laying the foundation for future collaboration and innovation. Supported by esteemed institutions and local authorities, including Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) and Perbadanan Putrajaya, these initiatives ignited a passion for design that resonated throughout the educational landscape.
The culmination of this endeavour, the KLAF2023 EDUCATE Exhibition titled “Our Future Generations,” showcased winning schemes and ‘Our Future City’ models. The exhibition stood as a testament to the power of creativity and collaboration. With 31 events under its belt, the EDUCATE theme illuminated pathways of discovery, fostering a spirit of unity and motivation within the architectural community.
BRIDGING THE GAP: THE SECOND THRUST
As the journey unfolded, the second thrust of EDUCATE emerged to bridge the gap between architectural education and practice. The Headstart program, hosted in eleven schools of architecture, offered invaluable insights into the nuances of the profession. Through workshops and mock interviews, graduates were equipped with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the complex landscape of architectural practice. Empowering a new generation of architects, this initiative laid the groundwork for a seamless transition into the professional realm.
PROPELLING FORWARD: THE THIRD THRUST
In addressing the present challenges faced by architects in Malaysia, the third thrust of EDUCATE, ‘Propel Forward,’ emerged as a beacon of guidance and support. The X-Tran program, held in collaboration with esteemed institutions such as the Faculty of Design and Architecture, UPM, Kuliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED), IIUM and the School of Architecture & Built Environment (SABE), UCSI, provided young architects with the essential skills and resources needed to thrive in the industry. Through six-day seminars led by seasoned professionals, participants embarked on a transformative journey, emerging as proficient and resilient members of the architectural community.
CELEBRATING LEADERSHIP AND COLLABORATION
At the heart of EDUCATE lie the remarkable architects who served as mentors, leaders, and friends. Individuals such as Ar. Rushdina Ismail, Ar. Sateerah Hassan, Ar. Aida Daud, and Ar. Hj. Syed Mohamed Radhi Syed Sakkaf exemplified the spirit of dedication and innovation, driving the initiative forward with unwavering passion and expertise.
A JOURNEY OF COLLABORATION AND INSPIRATION
Leading the charge with the KLAF2023: EDUCATE theme was a profoundly enriching experience, marked by collaboration with universities, local authorities, PAM chapters, and schools across Malaysia. Through initiatives such as X-TRAN, HEADSTART, Tales of Architecture, and Joy of Creating and Building, younger generations were engaged and inspired, emphasizing practical expression and creativity as the cornerstone of architectural excellence.
In reflection, PAM’s EDUCATE initiative stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and collaboration in shaping the future of architecture. As we continue to inspire, innovate, and educate, let us pave the way for a world where creativity flourishes and architectural dreams take flight.
