The nook carved out of the feature central island provides an engaging spot for discussions

We commenced the design process by deliberating on how to repurpose the ground floor common area of RDC following the removal of the product exhibition booths. The foremost goal was to foster a connection between RDC-ian and the public, reactivating the space to blend work with enjoyment. To accomplish this, we developed three key approaches: Rethink, Re-connect, and Revitalize. These ideas run through the entire design scheme. Rethink, which is to rethink the function of the spaces. Rethink involves re-imagining the function of the spaces; Re-connect focuses on enhancing engagement between employees, clients, and consultants; Revitalize aims to infuse the space with vibrancy and enjoyment. The overarching design inspiration is drawn from ‘The Dream,’ incorporating elements such as ‘cloud,’ ‘time,’ and ‘The Plus.’

The design unfolds into three distinct zones. Zone 1, ‘The Cloud,’ serves as a project showcase area, displaying RDC projects from three different regions (JB, KL and Malacca). The fluid shape of the platform not only symbolizes the dream cloud but also represents how architects start their designs from scratch. Thus, the completed projects reflect the architects’ hard work, dedication, and time investment. The laser-cut metal plate with raw finishes carved out the Johor Bahru outline forming an exhibit platform to present the architectural project designed by the company. Zone 2, ‘The Plus’’, is the centrepiece of the space, this area offers a multifunctional space for eating, conversation, discussions, or presentations, promoting engagement between RDC employees and the public, as well as fostering interaction among RDC employees themselves Zone 3, ‘The Time Travel,’ serves as a transitional space between the library, toilets, and the coffee bar. The idea behind this area is to create a space that visually represents the shift from a formal atmosphere to a relaxed one. The tilted tables align with the angled axis of ‘The Plus’ island to enhance visual connection while increasing the circulation area. The framing tunnel resembles a passage through time, leading to the coffee bar that offers not only coffee but also liquor. The vibrant and brightly painted orange tunnel serves as a striking feature, breaking away from the ordinary environment and also providing easy access to the toilets for visitors. This space allows homeowners to enjoy a relaxed hour with clients, fostering more personal engagement.

The highlight of the space, the design of ‘The Plus’ island draws inspiration from stalactite formations. The layered lighting and tiered seating resemble hands gradually interlocking from top to bottom, forming a powerful and sturdy column. We envision this island as not just a formal discussion space but also a place for joy and entertaining activities. This common space design epitomizes a cultural gathering place, embodying the spirit and vision of RDC.

By tailoring the design of the common spaces to suit RDC employees, we aim to cultivate a stronger community between them and the public, creating an enduring bond that will continue to grow and flourish over time.
