Located in Klang, Selangor, Dewan Konvensyen Bukit Raja exemplifies how thoughtful design can integrate sustainability with aesthetics and functionality. The centre incorporates a range of environmentally conscious strategies that reduce impact while offering a versatile space for diverse events.

A standout feature is the building’s passive architectural approach. Aligned east-west, it minimises heat gain by reducing direct sunlight exposure. Shady trees beneath the drop-off roof provide natural cooling and enhance the landscape. The naturally ventilated pre-function area operates without air conditioning, using cross-ventilation to maintain comfort while significantly lowering energy use—a practical solution for tropical climates.

The centre features a banquet hall with a 1,000-person capacity, which can be divided into two smaller spaces using a folding wall. A food preparation area supports catering for large-scale functions, boosting operational efficiency. As a convention and expo centre, it hosts a variety of events, from weddings to trade shows and home decor expos.

Above the pre-function area is an auditorium designed for performances and seminars. Access is via a dramatic cantilevered spiral staircase, anchored by a central round glass lift shaft, serving as a striking architectural centrepiece. Sustainability efforts extend to water conservation. A rainwater harvesting system collects and reuses rainwater for toilet flushing and landscape irrigation, reducing reliance on treated water.

To promote green mobility, the centre includes bicycle parking and shower facilities, encouraging cycling and reducing traffic and emissions. Material choices reflect aesthetic sustainability. Repurposed timber enhances the lobby ceiling, adding warmth and character while reducing waste.

The façade design merges function with cultural heritage. Inspired by the traditional Mashrabiya screen, it provides shade, ventilation, and privacy while allowing light in. The design also features motifs from the seal of Dato Ungku Naga Mengulur, a historic local leader, and the nine-petalled cape flower, Selangor’s state flower and a symbol of the Sultanate. These elements connect the building to regional identity and tradition. Perforated aluminium screens enhance the façade’s visual appeal and act as functional shading devices.

The centre has earned a provisional Green Rating from the Green Building Index (GBI) Malaysia, recognising excellence in energy efficiency, water conservation, and indoor environmental quality. Dewan Konvensyen Bukit Raja serves as a forward-thinking model of sustainable architecture, offering flexible, beautiful spaces rooted in local culture and built for a greener future.
