Spectrum House by TKCA Architect, located in Selangor, was initially two separate building blocks, which have been masterfully transformed into a cohesive living space. The design fulfils the users’ vision of a serene yet vibrant playground for their children. Spectrum House reinterprets elements of stained glass from ancient architecture with a modern twist, weaving a spectrum of colours into its architectural fabric, creating a whimsical yet modern essence for the dwelling.
The residence establishes distinct yet functional zoning, with leisure activities allocated to the left wing and family communal spaces centred on the right. This layout fosters a profound sense of privacy and security while allowing flexibility to accommodate guests in the adjacent wing. Preserving the existing building structure, the design reconnects the two blocks with a new double-volume activity lounge as its core, serving as both a linkage and a transitional space between the two zones.
Vibrant glass louvres positioned at the heart of Spectrum House transform the interior into a living canvas of light and colour that evolves with the movement of the sun throughout the day. This creates an interactive experience between the residents and the architecture. With its clean white finish and deliberately designed porous plane, the spiral staircase allows colourful rays from the adjacent window screens to wash over the interior walls and the staircase itself gently.
Expansive openings seamlessly connect the family spaces to the outdoor pool and pavilions, surrounded by greenery, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. These generous openings invite warm natural daylight to embrace the interior while promoting passive ventilation throughout the dwelling and allowing parents to oversee their children’s activities.
The design goes beyond creative expression to make a bold statement for architectural sustainability. It emphasises passive design strategies for tropical living, optimising layout orientation and opening placement to capture the prevailing wind. Additionally, all products and materials are meticulously selected for their low thermal transfer value and minimal environmental impact during installation and production. Spectrum House also adopts renewable energy sources and sustainable construction practices. These efforts earned Spectrum House a Platinum rating, the highest accolade from GreenRe (Malaysia’s Green Building Certification Body).
