THE VISIONARY WORKSPACE OF MENICON

Located in the Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Kedah, Malaysia, this facility represents more than just a manufacturing plant—it stands as Menicon’s largest global site for producing daily disposable contact lenses. Announced in March 2022 and completed in less than two years, by 2024, this facility is a tangible realisation of Menicon’s forward-thinking approach, designed to facilitate production while reflecting their commitment to environmental and social responsibility.

The design of the new Menicon facility goes beyond the traditional constraints of industrial architecture. It is a statement of both form and function. This building embodies Menicon’s sustainability vision while aligning with contemporary design trends. This project was an opportunity to explore how architecture can enhance productivity, nurture human well-being, and minimise environmental impact.

MERGING FUNCTIONALITY AND FORM

From the outset, the design brief focused on creating a space seamlessly supporting Menicon’s operational goals while reflecting its corporate ethos. The architectural language needed to be simple yet sophisticated—visually expressing the company’s dedication to precision and care while embracing modern sustainability principles.

A defining feature of the building is its façade, where vertical timber slats serve aesthetic and functional purposes. With the structure facing northwest, solar control was a key design challenge. The timber slats provide passive shading, shielding the full-height glass windows from direct sunlight during peak hours. This reduces glare, minimises heat gain, and enhances interior comfort while lowering cooling energy demands.

Beyond energy efficiency, these timber elements introduce a tactile, organic contrast to the sleek metal and glass exterior. Their warmth softens the industrial aesthetic, creating a harmonious dialogue between nature and technology. More than a design feature, these timber slats embody the philosophy that architecture should serve both people and the planet.

Sustainability guided every aspect of the design. A bold example is the integration of Menicon’s logo into a solar panel installation at the entrance roundabout. This structure not only enhances branding but also reinforces the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility—making a powerful statement before visitors even step inside.

A MINIMALIST DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Inside, the design follows a minimalist approach that reflects Menicon’s values—clarity, precision, and aflention to detail. The interior is simple yet sophisticated, where every element serves a purpose. In the reception area, clean white walls and smooth surfaces create a sense of purity and focus. For me, this space had to embody the essence of Menicon’s mission: to provide impeccable vision care.

The interplay of natural light and colour was carefully curated. Expansive windows flood the reception and office spaces with daylight, reducing reliance on artificial lighting while enhancing well-being. Overhead, suspended coloured panels introduce a subtle vibrancy, symbolising creativity and innovation— a reflection of the forward-thinking spirit that drives Menicon.

As architects, we saw light as more than just illumination; it became an integral part of the design language. Thoughtfully harnessed, natural and artificial light create a sense of openness and connection to the surrounding landscape. This approach softens the clinical precision of a production environment, ensuring employees feel engaged and inspired by their workspace.

BIOPHILIC DESIGN: CONNECTING WORKERS WITH NATURE

A central focus of this design was fostering a connection between people and nature. Biophilic elements—such as greenery, natural materials, and expansive views—were integral to my vision of a workspace that nurtures well-being. Large windows throughout the workspace and communal areas frame the landscape, offering employees a constant visual link to nature. Using natural timber finishes and earth-toned furniture further reinforces a seamless transition between the built environment and the outdoors.

In the cafeteria, for example, floor-to-ceiling windows allow employees to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the surrounding greenery as they relax and recharge. This intentional connection to nature enhances both mental and physical well-being while reinforcing Menicon’s commitment to a healthier, more sustainable workplace.

Beyond aesthetics, integrating plants and natural elements creates a space where people feel grounded and at ease. As modern work environments demand more indoor time, architecture must bridge the gap between the built world and the natural one—ensuring that even amid work, we remain connected to the world beyond our walls.

FLEXIBILITY AND COLLABORATION: DESIGNING FOR PEOPLE

Menicon’s facility was designed to promote collaboration, flexibility, and innovation—three key ingredients for success in today’s fast-paced world. The new plant will adapt to evolving operational needs while fostering teamwork and creative problem-solving among staff. An open-plan office layout encourages team communication, while modular furniture and flexible meeting rooms ensure the space can evolve alongside the company.

The goal was to create a dynamic space that would empower the people working there. Private meeting rooms and quiet zones provide areas for focused work, while open spaces encourage informal interactions and spontaneous collaboration. The office had to be as adaptable as the people using it, offering a variety of environments tailored to different tasks and working styles.

Breakout areas were designed not just for work but also for relaxation and creative recharge. These warm, welcoming spaces infused with greenery offer employees a place to unwind and socialise, reinforcing the idea that a productive workplace is also a comfortable and inspiring one.

A VISIONARY FUTURE: SUSTAINABILITY, INNOVATION, AND WELL-BEING

This project embodies innovation, sustainability, and human-centred design. It’s not just about producing contact lenses but creating a workspace where innovation thrives, sustainability is integral, and employee well-being is prioritised. The facility reflects the future of workspaces, blending natural materials, renewable energy, and flexible spaces to enhance the human experience. Thoughtful integration of daylight, energy-efficient systems, and biophilic elements fosters an environment that promotes both productivity and comfort.

Menicon’s new plant serves as a blueprint for how architecture can shape the industry, balancing sustainability with adaptability while supporting the people within. It’s a testament to a future where precision, possibility, and environmental responsibility coexist, proving that workspaces can be both high-performing and deeply connected to the well-being of their users.
