The KLAF2023 Marker Competition, an esteemed open competition, was launched on February 10, 2023, at the PAM Centre as “an open competition of architecture, art, and the creative sciences.” This initiative was designed to ignite creativity and provide a dynamic platform for artists and designers to showcase their talent.
Dubbed the “MARKER” competition, the event celebrated the possibility for final entries to take on any imaginable form. Competitors were encouraged to design and create sculptures, installations, paintings, relics, plaques, murals, or even simple symbols, with each piece aiming to evoke an emotional and memorable response — whether awe, comfort, or inspiration — in all who experience it.
In August 2024, the winning design, Luminous Heritage by Kaizer Hud, was unveiled at the PAM Centre’s double-volume ground floor reception area, where it now stands as a tribute to PAM’s centennial. Inspired by elements of Malaysian architectural heritage such as elevated forms, screening, light, translucency, tiered roofs, and intricate fenestration, Kaizer’s Marker serves as both a commemoration of PAM’s 100-year journey and a testament to the creative and collaborative spirit of PAM champions.
Second place was awarded to PAM Century Totem by Ar. IDr. Ts. Qhawarizmi Norhisham, whose towering sculpture symbolizes the organization’s resilience and growth over the past century. Each element of the totem was carefully selected to reflect PAM’s core values, traits, and mission. Third place went to Chronos/Chromosby Ar. Tan Kean Beng, whose design was inspired by the Greek concepts of time and colour. The form and dynamic hues of this marker symbolize the architect’s journey, embodying the passion that drives the architectural profession forward.
Three honourable mentions were awarded to Next100 Cube by Ar. Azim A. Aziz, Endless by Ar. Boon Che Wee, and Halo of Infinity by Mr. Wong Kai Yi. These award-winning works have elevated the standards of design and innovation, cementing the KLAF2023 PAM Marker Competition as a landmark event in PAM’s centennial celebration.
