Ar. Norzaini Mufti, the Director behind KLAF2023, had a clear and compelling vision. He wanted to create an event that celebrated the essence of architecture in its purest form – an event where every detail, every aspect, and every moment would be curated by individuals from architectural backgrounds. This resulted in the PAM/KLAF 2023 “100 Years” Gala Dinner, an extraordinary evening where the whole spectrum of the architecture fraternity joined in a unique celebration.
Why a gala dinner, and why is it organised entirely by individuals with architectural backgrounds? To answer these questions, one must understand the essence of the Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival (KLAF) 2023. It is a year-long celebration of architecture, a fitting commemoration of the Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia’s 100-year journey. KLAF2023 was designed to be more than just a series of events; it aimed to embody the spirit of architecture itself. Every element was a reflection of the creativity, innovation, and unity that defines the field of architecture.
The PAM/KLAF 2023 “100 Years” Gala Dinner welcomed Yang Berhormat Fahmi Fadzil, the Minister of Communications and Digital and Member of Parliament of Lembah Pantai as the Guest of Honour. His presence enriched the event, and his insights resonated strongly with the architectural community.
Ar. Abu Zarim, PAM President delivered the first speech that touched upon the PAM’s significant contributions to the architectural landscape in Malaysia, as well as its vision for the future.Ar. Norzaini Mufti, KLAF2023 Director, reflected on the festival’s accomplishment and highlighted the power of community in the industry and collaboration in shaping the future. The Guest of Honour, YB Fahmi Fadzil, emphasised architects’ role in dreaming and building better futures for Malaysia over the next 100 years.
One of the evening’s key highlights was the launch of the ’40 under 40′ book, celebrating 40 emerging architects under the age of 40. These individuals embody promising talents set to shape the architectural landscape in the years ahead. An exhibition showcasing the work of these emerging talents was displayed outside the ballroom.
The gala dinner was not just about celebration; it was an opportunity to give back to the community. KLAF2023, through its KLAF2023 Charity Initiative, presented cheques to three worthy causes: Humanitarian Care Malaysia Berhad (MyCare), Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation, and Akademi Remaja Islam Autisma Malaysia. These contributions demonstrated KLAF2023’s dedication to making a positive impact and fostering a sense of unity within the architectural community by assisting those in need.
Every detail of the gala was meticulously designed to align with the architectural theme. The entertainment, too, reflected this ethos. From the opening performance by Mestika, a group of architecture students from UiTM Puncak Alam, playing contemporary songs using ‘angklung’, to the all-architects bands- H3O and Friends, trio Azim and Friends, and S.O.A. (also from UiTM Puncak Alam), every performance had a common thread: architects, graduates, academicians, and architecture students showcasing their talents and creativity.
A highlight of the evening was the performance by ‘Ruffedge’, made more significant by one of its members being an architect. To commemorate PAM’s 100th anniversary, the gala was themed “Timeless Elegance.” Every detail was meticulously considered to reflect the essence of this theme, from the architectural-inspired decor to the elegant table centrepieces. The dress code, “Through The Decades,” allowed guests to step into the fashion and styles of various periods, adding a touch of nostalgia to the evening.
