A family home for 30 years, this residence has undergone multiple phases of transformation.Acquired by its current owners back in 1989, its most recent renovation works is its third phase of rejuvenation.

Completed in January 2019, Phase 3 of AirAngin’s upgrading works is a result of the necessity to suit the changing needs of family members. The owners are in their golden years and their three children have entered adulthood. As with its occupants, the house, too, must grow and transform.

One of the objectives of the extension is to create a core flexible space, not only for the family’s rest, recreation and celebrations, but to also cater for events hosted by each family member in line with their roles in the local community. Two of the children who run their own business can organise team-building and entertainment activities in the newly built Pavilion.Upon completion, AirAngin comprises three main components, which are:
1. The Mother House
2. The Pavilion, Pool & Gardens
3. The New Penthouse suits Wing

The three phases of growth are driven by the need to accommodate change.Spaces created encourage family-oriented activities, entertainment, gym exercise, yoga and meditation.

The design approach emphasises the interdependence between the indoors and its natural surroundings that remain daily constant during the various phases of renewal. This has helped to preserve the persona of the house.

AirAngin is rooted in the tradition of ‘Chinese Generational Family Houses’, promoting family ties and linkages.Three courtyards alternating with social spaces encourage family interaction while wings of enclosed family interaction while wings of enclosed family suites allow for privacy and personal freedom.
As the owners collect Southeast-Asian art and antiques, AirAngin features a gallery of modern art, tapestries, carvings, and Chinese ceramics. The selection of furniture ranges from a Korean medicine cabinet, antique oriental sideboard to the iconic Barcelona Chairs; all complementing the architecture making the home a living, breathing gallery.

The Pavilion, being the core of AirAngin, serves multiple functions. Not only is it a space for entertaining and an architect’s studio, it is also a gallery, a music lounge and a workout area. The Pavilion, having the longest span of a continuous wall in the house has the most potential of being a gallery wall allowing exhibits to change from time to time.

During the design process of AirAngin, minute details from lighting qualities to furniture layout are carefully configured to ensure each space is a harmonious composition. The original terrazzo tile chippings were repeated and these alternated with recycled kempas timber flooring.

These are in contrast to the black powder-coated aluminum framed fenestrations throughout the house creating a contemporary ambience. The soft palate of wall, floor and ceiling finishes coupled with the collection of modern and antique furnishings create an inviting and homely setting.

Being avid travellers, the collection of oriental ceramics, tapestries, wood sculptures, Turkish and Berber tribal carpets are carefully curated and hand-picked by the owners during their many visits.
